What Science Actually Understands About Consciousness

Science understands a lot about the machinery of consciousness and almost nothing about its essence. Researchers can track which brain states go with awareness, predict what you will and won't notice, and disrupt conscious experience with real precision. What they still can't explain is why any of that activity feels like something from the inside. That gap has a name, and it shapes everything else in this field.

What do we mean by consciousness?

Scientists studying consciousness usually mean two different things, and keeping them apart saves a lot of confusion.

The first is being awake and responsive, sometimes called the level of consciousness. A person under deep anesthesia has less of it. Someone alert and reading has more. You can measure this through behavior and brain activity.

The second is subjective experience: the fact that there is something it is like to taste coffee, feel cold, or see the color red. Philosophers call these felt qualities the contents of experience.

Most of what science has learned sits in the first category. The second is where the real mysteries live.

What can researchers actually measure?

Quite a lot, and this is where the field earns its keep.

Researchers can identify the neural correlates of consciousness: patterns of brain activity that reliably show up alongside a conscious experience. If you consciously see an image, certain networks tend to fire. If the same image flashes too briefly for you to notice, those networks often stay quiet even though your eyes registered it.

They can also manipulate awareness directly. Using techniques where two different images compete between your eyes, one image dominates your awareness while the other fades, then they swap, all without the images themselves changing. This helps researchers separate what the eyes take in from what the mind actually experiences.

Anesthesia offers another window. It reliably switches conscious experience off and on, and studying how it does that has taught researchers a great deal about which brain functions seem necessary for awareness.

Because explaining the machinery isn't the same as explaining the experience.

Philosopher David Chalmers drew this line clearly in the 1990s. He called questions like how the brain integrates information or focuses attention the easy problems. Not easy to solve, but easy in principle, since they're about function and mechanism.

The hard problem is different. Even if you mapped every neuron and knew exactly which circuits fire when you see red, you still wouldn't have explained why that process comes with the felt experience of redness rather than nothing at all.

No current theory closes that gap in a way most researchers accept. That's not a failure of effort. It may be that experience needs a different kind of explanation than the ones physical science usually offers. Being honest about that is more useful than pretending it's solved.

How do attention and perception shape what you experience?

More than you'd guess. Your conscious world isn't a live feed of reality. Many researchers describe it as a construction, heavily edited by attention.

You don't notice most of what reaches your senses. Attention selects a slice of it, and that slice becomes your experience. Perception also seems to involve prediction. Many researchers describe the brain as constantly generating expectations about what's out there and correcting them against incoming signals. On this view, much of what you see is a best guess, not raw data. Optical illusions are often explained this way, as the brain's guesses getting exploited.

What are the leading scientific theories?

Several serious theories compete, and none has won broad consensus. Two are worth knowing.

Global Workspace Theory, associated with researchers such as Bernard Baars, proposes that a mental experience becomes conscious when information gets broadcast widely across the brain, made available to memory, language, and decision making. On this view, consciousness is a kind of shared stage.

Integrated Information Theory, developed by Giulio Tononi and colleagues, takes a different route. It proposes that consciousness corresponds to how much a system integrates information into a unified whole, and it tries to define a measure of that integration.

These theories disagree in deep ways, and researchers are actively running experiments designed to pit them against each other. That competition is a sign of a living field, not a broken one.

What does this mean for how you understand yourself?

Here's the practical part. Knowing that your experience is constructed, selective, and not fully explained can change how you hold your own mind.

It invites humility. If your perception involves prediction rather than pure recording, your first impression of a situation might be worth a second look.

It also invites curiosity instead of fear. The unsolved parts of consciousness aren't a threat. They're an open field.
