What does attention actually do?

Attention selects. Out of the flood of sound, light, sensation, and thought arriving every second, it lifts a small portion into clear awareness and dims the rest.
Think of a spotlight in a dark theater. The stage is full, but you see the actor the light lands on. Move the light and the previous figure drops back into shadow. Your conscious experience works much the same way: rich where the light points, vague everywhere else.
This is not a flaw. If everything reached you at full strength, you couldn't act. Selection is what makes coherent thought and action possible.
Can you really not multitask?
For two tasks that both need conscious control, no. Psychologists have studied this using paradigms such as the dual-task and psychological refractory period designs, where people respond to two signals in quick succession. In these studies, responses to the second signal tend to slow down when it arrives close on the heels of the first.
The general takeaway: some kind of bottleneck sits in the process, limiting how many demanding decisions can pass through at once.
What you can do is combine one automatic task with one controlled one. Walking while talking works because walking is nearly automatic. Writing an email while listening to someone explain something new tends not to work, because both may draw on the same limited resource.
So when you feel scattered switching between tabs and messages, you're not failing. You may be feeling the real cost of moving the spotlight that this research describes.

Where does everything you ignore go?
It mostly gets filtered out before you notice it, though not entirely. Early attention researchers argued about whether the mind blocks unattended information right away or lets some through. The evidence suggests it depends on circumstances.
You've likely lived the classic example. In a noisy room you can follow one conversation and tune out the others. Yet if someone across the room says your name, it can snap your attention over. That suggests the ignored channel was not fully shut off. Something in you may still have been scanning it for meaning.
So filtering appears to be real, but it seems leaky by design. Meaningful signals can sometimes break through even when you're not consciously tracking them.

Why do you miss obvious things right in front of you?

Because attention is limited, and what you don't attend to, you often don't consciously see. Researchers call this inattentional blindness. When people concentrate hard on one task, they can fail to notice a plainly visible, unexpected event in the same scene.
A well-known demonstration of this comes from psychologists Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris, whose selective-attention study asked viewers to count basketball passes. A substantial number of participants missed a person in a gorilla suit walking through the middle of the action. The event was obvious in plain sight, but attention was pointed elsewhere.
This matters for how you understand your own mind. Seeing is not passive recording. You build your visual world from the fragments attention selects, which is humbling and worth remembering the next time you're certain you saw everything.
What does this mean for the "hard problem" of consciousness?
Attention research explains a great deal about how information gets selected, but it doesn't explain why any of it feels like anything. Philosopher David Chalmers named this the hard problem of consciousness: the gap between the physical processing in a brain and the subjective experience of, say, the color red.
We can describe which signals reach awareness and which don't. We can point to brain activity that tracks conscious experience. What we still can't explain is why processing comes with an inner felt life at all.
Keep those two questions separate. How attention selects is being mapped in detail. Why selection produces experience remains open. Being honest about that line is part of taking the subject seriously.

How can you work with a mind that has one spotlight?
Stop fighting the design and use it. A few grounded, reflective practices follow from what this research suggests, and the method behind our own approach draws on many of these same principles.
